Five Check Engine Light Issues That Get Worse If Ignored

Whether you drive a Mercedes Benz or almost any other type of modern vehicle, the check engine light may come on if there is trouble. This light can indicate numerous things, and it's nearly impossible to tell what the issue is, unless you bring the car into a repair shop. In some cases, it may be a small problem such as a loose gas cap. However, in many cases, the problem could be serious, and ignoring it may only make it worse

1. Oxygen Sensor

Also called the O2 sensor, the oxygen sensor monitors oxygen levels in the engine. If this sensor isn't working correctly, it will trigger the check engine light. If not repaired, the broken sensor will allow the vehicle to use more gas than it needs. That inefficiency can be expensive at the gas pumps, and the damage could spread to the catalytic converters, causing an even more expensive repair.

2. Ignition Coil

Ignition coils generate electricity that allows the spark plugs to ignite. If the check engine light is on due to problems with the ignition coil, the coil or the nearby spark plugs could start to misfire. This affects the car's ability to run, and ultimately, your car could simply stop running while on the road.

3. Mass Air Flow Sensor

While the O2 sensor monitors the oxygen levels, the mass air flow sensor controls how much oxygen flows into the engine. This sensor is extremely important if you live in areas with high altitude. A non-working mass airflow sensor may reduce your fuel efficiency, but even worse, it may cause your car to stall while using it. If you are driving at altitude, the lack of air going to the engine as you climb to higher heights could lead to overheating. Overheating can damage your entire engine.

4. Aftermarket Electronics

This problem is fairly easy to detect. If you have just installed aftermarket electronics such as alarms or stereos and the check engine light goes on, that typically signals that the electronics are installed incorrectly. Misinstalled electronics could drain your battery, and the electronics could come on when least desired. That can get annoying, and replacing the battery costs money as well.

5. Catalytic Converter

If the check engine light is on because of the catalytic converter, there is also usually an underlying issue. If you take your vehicle in for a repair, the repair professionals can find the underlying issue and address that. They can also repair the converter. Without that part, you may fail your emissions test (if there is one in your area), and that can make it impossible to register your vehicle.

As you can see, many check engine issues simply get worse if ignored. If your check engine light is on, you may want to call your local repair shop to set up a diagnostic. For more information, contact a business such as Silver Star Motors Mercedes-Benz Specialists.
